MARIA ANTONIETTA ROSITANI È UNA DELLE DONNE CORAGGIO DELL’EDIZIONE 2021

Conosciamo meglio Maria Antonietta RositanI, sopravvissuta alla ferocia dell’ex marito che, dopo anni di violenze fisiche e psicologiche, arriva ad evadere dagli arresti domiciliari pur di provare ad ucciderla, cospargendola di benzina e appiccando il fuoco. Seppur lottando con le terribili ustioni riportate sul 50% del corpo, Maria Antonietta affronta con tenacia un lungo percorso di riabilitazione diventando, per molte donne, esempio vivente di forza e rinascita. A lei, il premio “Donna Coraggio”.

Vent'anni di urla, insulti, schiaffi e calci, subiti in silenzio per paura e per amore, mentendo a se stessa e agli altri, e sperando che lui un giorno potesse cambiare. Poi la forza di denunciare, trovata quando anche sua figlia è diventata vittima della violenza. Un coraggio che non è stato, però, ripagato perché la sua prima denuncia è rimasta lettera morta lasciando che le aggressioni diventassero sempre più cruente.  E quando finalmente un processo per maltrattamenti in famiglia viene avviato, l'ex marito, condannato anche in appello, dopo aver ottenuto i domiciliari, evade dall'abitazione dei genitori ad Ercolano per raggiungerla  a Reggio Calabria e darla alle fiamme. Lei, compagna di una vita e madre dei suoi figli.

È questa la storia di Maria Antonietta Rositani, che nel 2019, a 42 anni, si ritrova con il 50% del corpo coperto da feroci ustioni. Ricordando quel giorno, la stessa Maria Antonietta racconta:  "Alle 6 del mattino squilla il telefono di casa. Penso sia successo qualcosa ai miei familiari. Invece, una voce, coperta da rumori, mi inonda di parolacce. Attacco, ma richiama. Questa volta la voce è nitida. È lui. Metto fuori posto il telefono, ma chiama anche al cellulare e continua a insultarmi. Lo spengo ed esco di casa per accompagnare a scuola i miei due figli. Al ritorno vengo informata che il mio ex marito è evaso. Mentre mi sto precipitando dai carabinieri, la mia auto viene speronata bloccandomi l'uscita dal lato guida. Prendo il cellulare mentre la mia macchina sta finendo contro un muro e chiamo la polizia per dire che il mio ex mi sta per ammazzare, comunicando in fretta la via in cui mi trovo. Guardandomi negli occhi, getta benzina e appicca il fuoco all'interno dell'auto dal lato passeggero. Cominciano le fiamme, apro la portiera lato passeggero e per uscire vado contro di lui che mi butta addosso la benzina urlandomi di morire”.

“Sento una forza incredibile - prosegue Maria Antonietta - che mi fa scappare, fermarmi a bere l'acqua di una pozzanghera per tamponarmi un po’ le fiamme, e spogliarmi degli abiti che bruciano. Lui, da vile e codardo, scappa. Lo arresteranno il giorno dopo vicino a una pizzeria dove tranquillamente aveva acquistato della pizza che stava mangiando in pieno centro, distante pochissimi metri dal Comando dei Carabinieri. Questo dimostra quanto sia spavaldo".  Da qui, ha dunque inizio il secondo calvario di Maria Antonietta: numerosi interventi e continue medicazioni, una settimana di coma e un mese in rianimazione in seguito a serie complicanze, poi la terapia intensiva. Il suo corpo completamente fasciato, la mobilità ridotta, i dolori che si fanno sempre più lancinanti a causa di ferite ancora aperte. 

Nella Giornata internazionale contro la violenza sulle donne, Maria Antonietta fa arrivare un messaggio a chi sta vivendo violenze e aggressioni in una lunga lettera che è stata diffusa in tutte le scuole della sua città, Reggio Calabria. In quelle pagine, scrive: "Sono stati vent'anni di atrocità in cui avevo gli occhi chiusi. Sono stati vent'anni di bugie dette per prima a me stessa. Ho avuto il coraggio di dire basta quando lui ha colpito al volto mia figlia, intervenuta in mia difesa, con uno schiaffo così forte da farle uscire il sangue. L'amore, invece, non lascia mai lividi sul corpo, non offende, non ti dice che non vali e non servi a niente, non minaccia di morte. L'amore dovrebbe essere carezze, felicità e sensazioni che io purtroppo non ho mai provato. Quindi dico a tutte le donne che stanno subendo violenza: aprite gli occhi, non abbiate paura di raccontare la verità, prima a voi stesse e poi a tutti gli altri. Dobbiamo denunciare perché oggi siamo noi, domani può essere nostra figlia, nostra nipote, nostra zia o qualunque altra persona. E siamo proprio noi che dobbiamo dare l'esempio".

Maria Antonietta fa anche un appello anche alle istituzioni: "Lo Stato deve dare risposte, sostenere le donne che denunciano e sensibilizzare tutti gli operatori affinché non sottovalutino le loro richieste di aiuto".

Maria Antonietta Rositani is a very strong women who survived to an attempted murder carried out by her ex-husband. And before that tragic day, she had already spent twenty years of her life lying to herself and to the others among screams, insults, slaps and kicks. Only when also her daughter became victim of the same violence, she found the strength to report against his husband. But, at first, her complaint was no more than a dead letter, while the violence became worse and worse. And even when, a trial for abuse was finally started, her former husband escaped, while under house arrest, to reach her many hundreds of kilometres away and set her on fire.

This is the story of Maria Antonietta Rositani, a 42 years old women that, in 2019, suddenly ended up to live with the 50% of her body covered with burns. With this words, she remembered that day: “At 6 Am, I received a call. I thought that something bad had happened to my family. Instead, I heard a voice, covered by noise, insulting me. Then, I received a second call: that time I could clearly recognise his voice. He kept on calling and insulting me. I switched off my mobile and brought my two children to school. On the way back, I was informed that my former husband had escaped. As I was rushing to the police station, my car got rammed blocking me to exit on the driver’s side. As my car was about to hit a wall, I reached the phone and called the police to tell that my husband was coming to kill me and where it was happening. Looking at me in the eyes, he threw petrol and set fire to the passenger seat. Flames were bursting, I opened the car and he threw petrol over me while saying that I had to die. In that moment, I felt an incredible strength that made me run away, stop at a pond to put out flames and take the burning clothes off. The coward ran away. He would be arrested the following day, in a restaurant where he was eating, near the police station. It showed his arrogance.”

But that day, Maria Antonietta’s ordeal was just beginning: during the following months, she spend a week in a coma she and a month in ICU because of serious complications: her body was completely bandaged and her mobility really reduced. But her courage has been unrivalled and last year, on the International Day for the elimination of violence against women, she spread a message to people that are suffering from violence and aggressions: “For twenty years, I kept my eyes shut. For twenty years, I lied firstly to myself. I had the courage to say stop when he hit my daughter on the face and made her bleed. She intervened to defend me. Love never leaves bruises on your skin, it doesn’t offend you, it doesn’t tell you that you aren’t enough, it doesn’t threaten you. Love should be caress and happiness, all sensations that I have never felt, unfortunately. Therefore, I say to all the women who are suffering from violence: open your eyes, don’t be afraid to tell the truth first to yourself and then to the others. We have to press charges since today it is be us, but tomorrow it can happen to our daughter, niece, aunt, anyone. And we have to set the example.”

Maria Antonietta makes an appeal also to the institutions: “Our Government must answer and support women who report against their abusers and raise awareness among all the operators in order not to underestimate help requests.”
